Paris Olympics Virtual Reality Parachute Flight

The challenge:

The French Parachute National Federation (FFP) has asked us to offer visitors to their Grande Halle de la Villette booth on 10th and 11th August with an immersive and thrilling experience of flying their parachutes to land next to the Eiffel Tower in the center of Paris. This unique concept is intended to provide a memorable and engaging activity for athletes and visitors, aligning with the Olympic Games’ spirit of adventure and excellence.

Our solution:

To address the limited space issue while fulfilling the desire to offer a parachute flight experience, we developed a unique state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) parachute simulator. Our solution is perfectly tailored to fit the constraints of the Village while delivering an unparalleled experience.

The result: a collection of photos to share what happened:

La Villette Park

Our location was Club France: the French Olympic team base

Crowds gathered

Attendence was over 25,000 for each of the two days we were there.

Our queue

We had a queue from doors open at 10.00am to doors closed at 7.00pm.

New canopypilots get to fly around the Eiffel Tower, score points by flying through five rings and land as close as possible to the target.  They need to understand where the wind is coming from, their parachute performance, the controls they have available, where the rings are that they need to fly through and finally where the target is located.

Gold medal winner

Of over two hundred new canopy pilots, we had a clear winner when Taieb Riahi scored a 0.0 meter dead center.

Olympic moment

It was not all work for our team.  Jeremie (left) and Ronnie taking in an Olympic moment.

Finally: a job well done

The FFP team celebrate at the end of two long and very successful days.

Realistic:

Advanced VR technology allows users to feel the adrenaline rush of piloting their descent. The visuals, sounds, and physical sensations are meticulously designed to mimic real-life parachuting, providing an authentic and exhilarating adventure in an efficient space.

Easy to Manage:

Use off-the-shelf VR goggles and a VR-ready PC, is easy to manage and requires minimal setup. Our solution can be installed indoors within a compact area, making it ideal for the densely packed Olympic Village environment. Maintenance and operation are straightforward, ensuring a hassle-free experience for organizers.

A reason to become engaged:

Includes an accuracy competition feature to enhance engagement and foster a competitive spirit. Users can compete to land their virtual parachutes as close as possible to a target next to the Eiffel Tower. This feature adds excitement and encourages repeated participation as visitors strive to improve their scores. It’s a perfect blend of fun and challenge, embodying the Olympic values of determination and excellence.

Don’t take our word for it…

Brian Germain

Author of The Parachute and its Pilot, the Ultimate Guide for the Ram Air Aviator: “Navigation is the part of the skydive that so many new canopy pilots struggle with. This amazing simulator helps so magnificently with this very aspect of parachute flight, with realistic physics and great visuals.”

Sherry Butcher

Owner of Aerohio: “we love love love using the VR! It has been such a great training tool”.

We’ve been utilizing Canopypilot at Skydive Vancover Island for the last 2 years as part of our skydiver training program.  It’s an excellent tool as it gives the student a site picture of what flying the parachute over our Skydive Centre looks like from the comfort of the classroom.  We’ve found our students to be much more proficient right on their first real skydive thanks to the virtual training that they receive with Canopy Pilot.  The service from Ronnie and the team to support this product has been spectacular.  I wasn’t familiar with VR at all and they helped with the purchase of the right equipment and provided guidance for set up.  As this tool develops and evolves it is sure to become the gold standard in student training.
